This is the first book in history to mention the Volcanic Legacy National Scenic Byway (page 303). It is not in the Table of Contents or the index and it is a sub-section under the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness. That's on the other side of the Cascades! In addition, a proper map is not included! We suspect these errors were the result of hastily including the byway as the book went to press - it should have had its own heading in the "Western Klamath Region" section of the book. Hopefully future editions will resolve these problems. Still, this is a useful book because it covers several areas that you have explored in our website: The Mountain Lakes Wilderness Area, The Sky Lakes Wilderness, Upper Klamath Lake, The Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, Lake of the Woods, Mt. McLoughlin, and Crater Lake National Park. With the exception of Crater Lake National Park that that has 10 pages of coverage, each of the other parts of our area are covered in a page or two.
As an example of the treatment each section gets, the discussion about Mt. McLoughlin includes a brief history of the mountain's name and a description of the vegetation on the flanks of the mountain. Finally the author describes the trail itself and provides directions to get there.

Yes, the slideshows, panoramas, object movies and linear movies you see on the web are magic - and science. This book includes all of the details you need to implement many of the features you have seen in the Virtual Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway website.
